The Thalassemia Center will now remain open every Friday, marking the first time in its 31‑year history that the facility is providing services on a Friday.

In a post on X, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said the center began Friday operations on 20 February 2026, noting that the center had never offered services on a Friday since it opened on 29 December 1994. According to the President, the first Friday alone saw 14 transfusions carried out and five people donating blood.

The President added that blood‑donation services will also be available every Friday at designated times after Ramadan. He said the change will make it easier for people from the atolls to travel to Male' over the weekend and access transfusion and donation services without taking time off during the workweek.

The Thalassemia Center was relocated to Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumale' Phase I on 8 May 2024, where it continues to operate.
