President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu decided on Monday to provide MVR 100,000 to residents of the Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats who have settled the full payments and now own their units.
People began living at the Male’ Hiyaa and Sinamale’ flats in the early 1990s. These flats, while more spacious than the flats later built under social housing projects, are now severely rundown.
On Monday, President Muizzu hosted residents of the Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats in the Galolhu district of Male’ at his official residence, Mulee’aage.
According to the President’s Office, the residents briefed President Muizzu on their current living conditions, outstanding rent and penalty charges, and the challenges they face in meeting these obligations.
In response, President Muizzu announced that a special allowance will be granted to residents of Sinamale’ flats 1, 2, 3 and 4, as well as Male’ Hiyaa flats 1 and 2.
He further decreed that all penalties on outstanding rent be waived. He said that a payment of MVR 100,000 will be provided to families residing in these flats, taking into account the prolonged failure to address structural issues and deterioration of the buildings.
Where the total outstanding amount exceeds MVR 100,000, the amount payable will be capped at MVR 100,000. If the outstanding amount is less than MVR 100,000, it will be fully waived and the remaining balance deposited into the resident’s account.
Meanwhile, residents who have already settled the full payment for their flats will receive the full MVR 100,000 directly into their accounts.

During a December meeting with residents of Galolhu, President Muizzu promised to provide effective solutions to the longstanding issues facing the tenants of Male’ Hiyaa and Sinamale’ flats.
During his mayorship, President Muizzu announced a project to develop new residential buildings to rehouse the residents Male’ Hiyaa and Sinamale’ flats. Back then, he blamed the administration of the-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for blocking the project.
However, the project remains stalled, even now.
