Fewer than 2,000 members voted in the Adhaalath Party’s online election for a new president, according to figures released by the party’s election committee.
The vote was held on Saturday from 0900 to 2000 hrs through the Fahivote application.
Provisional results show Sheikh Mohamed Shifan won the presidency with 99 percent of the vote, while his rival, Dr Ikram Abdul Sattar, and running mate Mohamed Muthalib received just one percent. Sheikh Abdullah Rasheed was elected vice‑president with the same margin.
A total of 1,835 members cast their ballots, 22 percent of the 8,340 eligible voters.
This year’s internal election took place amid disagreements over the voting method. On January 11, Ikram formally requested that ballot boxes be used, but the party’s internal election regulations do not permit ballot‑box voting. He later issued a statement alleging the process violated principles of fairness and announced that he would boycott the election.
Shifan, the party’s sitting vice‑president, contested with the backing of Mohamed Iyaz Abdul Latheef and Sheikh Ilyas Hussain.
According to the Election Commission, the Adhaalath Party currently has 8,267 registered members.
