Adhaalath Party opened online voting on Saturday to elect a new leader.
Voting began at 09:00 am and is set to close at 03:00 pm.
According to AP, the voting is being conduct completely online through the Fahi Vote app.
The decision to hold online voting comes despite one of the candidates, Dr. Ikram Abdul Sattar, pushing for in-person voting.
He filed a letter with the party on January 11 seeking to have voting carried out in-person.
However, the party decided that its bylaws does not allow for in-person voting for internal elections.
Ikram later issued a statement alleging lack of transparency and justice in the voting process. He also announced he was boycotting the election in protest and withdrew his candidacy.
Ikram had been competing for the leadership of AP against the party’s incumbent deputy leader Sheikh Mohamed Shifan, who has the backing of the party’s longtime leader Imran Abdulla, Sheikh Iyaz Abdul Latheef, and Sheikh Ilyas Hussain.
