Two Maldivian youths arrested with over one-kilo drugs

Two Maldivian youths have been arrested from Male’ with over one-kilo of drugs.

Maldives Police Service said the suspects were arrested during a counter-narcotics operation conducted by the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter Narcotics Intelligence on Monday.

In this regard, the Police detailed that over one-kilo of drugs were seized during a search of an apartment in Male’ following their arrest. However, the Police did not disclose any further details regarding the drugs seized.

The suspects have been identified as Mohamed Evan Haamid, 23, Valuthereyge, GDh. Madaveli and Mohamed Raid Ali As’ar, 31, H. Sakeena Manzil.

Both suspects have been remanded in custody for seven days upon presentation before the court.

During the remand hearing, Raid requested house arrest, stating that he suffers from serious mental health issues and claiming that he has previously been exploited to carry out criminal activities.

However, the court refused to be lenient with respect to his remand.

The case is under further investigation by the Police.
