New dredger joins Hulhumale', Giraavaru land reclamation work

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the arrival of a second dredger to accelerate land reclamation at Hulhumale' Phase III and Giraavaru lagoon, with both projects expected to conclude within three months.

Dredging at Hulhumale' Phase III resumed on November 10 after a temporary halt. In a post on X, the President confirmed that the dredger TSHD Prins Der Nederlanden, brought in from the Netherlands, will begin operations on Wednesday alongside TSHD Oranji, which is already active at the site.

The President stated that Hulhumale' Phase III is expected to be completed by the end of next month, after which both dredgers will be redeployed to Giraavaru. There, land reclamation is projected to finish within two to three months, pending completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and other formalities.

The project is being carried out by Capital Marine and Civil Construction (CMCC), which is tasked with reclaiming a total of 63 hectares in Hulhumale' Phase III. Of this, 24 hectares have already been excavated, with 38 hectares now being dredged following the restart of operations.

Originally launched in September 2023 under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration, the reclamation initiative is part of a broader effort to expand housing and infrastructure in the Greater Male' region.
