Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairman Fayyaz Ismail has resigned.
Fayyaz Ismail, who was elected Chairman of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on May 23, 2022 after contesting against National Assembly Member Imthiyaz Fahmy, stepped down from the post on Sunday.
In his resignation letter addressed to MDP National Assembly members, Fayyaz said he had assumed the role “with sweet hopes” and worked to resolve differences among party leaders, despite facing significant challenges in running the party.
He noted that internal unrest is now casting a shadow over the party’s work. Fayyaz also acknowledged his interest in contesting the 2028 presidential election, though he said others with similar ambitions are already at the forefront.
“Members of the National Assembly, I will always put the interest of the country and the party above my own. Therefore, I intend to put an end to the perception that I am an obstacle to the party advisor and the party president in deciding the affairs of this party with full authority and power,” Fayyaz wrote.
