The foundation stone for a new 50-bed hospital in Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo was laid on Saturday, marking the official commencement of the project.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, joined by Dhidhdhoo constituency MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed, MTCC Managing Director (Retd) DCP Ahmed Saudee, and senior officials from the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The Ministry of Health awarded the contract to MTCC on September 25 for MVR 185.6 million. Under the project, a four-storey hospital building will be constructed, along with a service block and perimeter fencing.

The new facility will include an isolation unit, radiology department, X-ray, CT scan, MRI, mammography, and ultrasound services. Additional infrastructure will feature a waste management centre, industrial laundry, and an oxygen plant.

The project has seen multiple shifts in planning. In May 2022, the previous administration awarded the contract to an Indian company to build a 50-bed hospital in Dhidhdhoo. Later, in April 2023, China’s International Development Cooperation Agency signed an agreement to conduct a feasibility study. The project has now been formally handed to MTCC.
