EyeCare Hospital has successfully performed the Maldives’ first Combined Belt Buckle with Pars Plana Vitrectomy, a complex retinal surgery that marks a major advancement in the country’s ophthalmic care.
The procedure was conducted on November 2, by Dr. Amogh Asgaonkar, Consultant in Vitreo Retina, ROP & Phacoemulsification Surgery, on a 51-year-old Maldivian patient.
The surgery was carried out to treat a severe case of retinal detachment in a highly myopic eye. Retinal detachment, a condition where the retina separates from its normal position, can lead to sudden and painless vision loss. Risk factors include high myopia, uncontrolled diabetes, eye trauma, and chronic inflammation.
Dr. Asgaonkar’s team employed a dual approach: externally supporting the retina with a soft silicone band through scleral buckling, and internally stabilizing it using Pars Plana Vitrectomy, Endolaser, and Silicone Oil Injection. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia and required microscope-assisted precision and coordinated teamwork.
“This is a landmark achievement for EyeCare Hospital and for retinal care in the Maldives,” said hospital representatives. “Patients can now access advanced retinal surgeries locally, without needing to travel abroad.”
Hospital officials emphasized the importance of regular eye screening for individuals at risk, noting that early detection remains the best defense against permanent vision loss.
