South Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi (IB) has stated that island councils are more effective than city councils in delivering services and development, and that separating Feydhoo from Addu City Council would bring greater benefits to the island.
Speaking on SSTV’s Baaru Hathareh program, IB said the upcoming referendum was prompted by concerns raised by Addu City residents to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu regarding poor execution of administrative duties and stalled development projects.
“When Addu was declared a city, Feydhoo and Meedhoo opposed the move, but the government proceeded regardless,” IB said, highlighting longstanding dissatisfaction with the centralized structure.
He pointed out disparities in service delivery across Addu, noting that Hithadhoo’s larger population results in more elected councilors and greater influence over budget allocations. “Even if Feydhoo’s budget includes funds for streetlight replacements, those resources are often redirected to Hithadhoo,” he said. “Feydhoo only gets what Hithadhoo gives".
IB also cited Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo as examples of islands facing similar challenges under the current city council structure.
Drawing a comparison with Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, IB said the island, with its own council, has successfully developed infrastructure including an airport, schools, guesthouses, and full water and sewage services. “They are able to generate wealth because they manage their own affairs,” he added.
The referendum, scheduled for sometime late October, will allow residents of Feydhoo, Hulhudhoo, and Meedhoo to decide whether to remain under Addu City Council or form separate councils.
IB emphasized that if Feydhoo opts for separation, its budget would be used exclusively for the island, with no external influence over land allocation or business registration. The referendum is an opportunity for Feydhoo to decide its own future, he said.
