Some lawmakers, on Monday, have reported that efforts are underway to hold extraordinary parliamentary sittings out of session.
The Parliament has been in recess since August 19th. After going to recess, the Parliament has held two extraordinary sittings out of session for the preliminary debate and vote on the controversial media bill, which would grant the government significant control over the media, and the bill on holding public referendums. Both bills were accepted to the Parliament and forwarded to the Committee, which has since begun work on the legislations.
A PNC lawmaker, which holds supermajority on the Parliament, and an opposition MDP lawmaker has confirmed that efforts are underway to hold extraordinary sittings out of session on next Monday and Tuesday. Neither lawmaker was aware of why the sittings were being held, as the agenda had not yet been issued.
While efforts are underway to hold extraordinary sittings out of the session, the Parliament will reopen for the third and last session for this year next month.
Notably, the media bill, which is presently committee stage, has garnered backlash both locally and internationally. Nevertheless, the government and Attorney General Ahmed Usham have defended the bill.
