The state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has announced its intent to commence fish procurement in Fuvahmulah city starting in August, with ongoing purchases planned thereafter.

This commitment was affirmed by MIFCO's CEO, Rtd Brigadier General Farhath Shaheer, following a meeting with the City Council.

In addition, MIFCO confirmed that the fish processing center currently under construction in Fuvahmulah will be completed and operational within the year. This will ensure that processed fish products are readily available to Fuvahmulah residents.

For a long time, fishermen across the Maldives have faced challenges in selling their catch due to inadequate fish purchasing infrastructure in various parts of the country. To address these difficulties, MIFCO is implementing strategies to source fish from a wider range of locations.

Last week, the company revealed its plan to initiate direct fish exports from Addu City next month. This new approach will streamline the current process, which often involves transporting fish from Addu City to Huvadhoo Atoll before export. Furthermore, MIFCO aims to enhance the value of fish within Addu City by the end of the year.
