China is extending assistance to the Maldives in protecting its coconut trees from pests.
The agreement on the implementation of the China-funded coconut tree pest control project was signed by Maldivian Agriculture Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya and Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua on Monday.
According to the Chinese embassy, the project aims to enhance the prevention and control level of coconut tree diseases and pests in the Maldives in a green and environmentally friendly manner, stabilize the income of local farmers, and protect environmental resources.
It also aims to help the Maldives establish an independent and sustainable system for the prevention and control of coconut tree diseases and pests.
According to the embassy, China will be sending experts to the Maldives to provide training and guidance, and build a factory in the Maldives.
Kong noted that food security is of vital importance to the Maldives.
“I'm very glad that the two countries can sign this agreement. Food security is of vital importance to the Maldives. China and the Maldives will continue to cooperate in agricultural security including food security and sustainable agricultural development. I will place it at the top of my future work list,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mariya expressed gratitude to China for its long-time support for the development of agriculture and other fields in Maldives.
She expressed keenness to work together with China to continue strengthening agricultural cooperation between the two countries and learn from China's expertise in the field.
