The first event under Sun Siyam Group’s blood donation camp, held annually in commemoration of the group’s anniversary, launched in Sun Siyam Olhuveli on Tuesday, May 13th.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of Sun Siyam Group.

The group’s Sun Siyam Resorts currently operates five luxury tourist resorts in the Maldives that include Siyam World, Iru Fushi, Vilu Reef, Iru Veli and Olhuveli.

Sun Siyam Group first launched its blood donation camp to mark its anniversary in 2015 and was halted in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic after which it resumed in 2023.

The blood donation camp at Olhuveli was initiated by the senior members of the resort’s management. Speaking at the event, the Assistant Group General Manager Hassan Adil noted that over 400 of the group’s staff donated blood every year.

Dr. Joodha Rasheed, from Maldivian Blood Services (MBS) said a total of 670 thalassaemia patients across the country received regular blood transfusion services, out of which 327 alone are patients living in Greater Male’ area.

“We anticipate this event every year because of the high number of donors we receive from Sun Siyam Resorts. I would like to express my gratitude to Sun Siyam Resorts for this due to [the camp’s] benefits to the society,” Joodha commented.

While speaking at the event, the HR Director of Olhuveli, Ahmed Shazeen praised the resort’s staff, and said they were cautious about the social initiatives.

What we are seeing today is a great number of staff turning up to donate blood. Last year 132 employees donated blood, and we hope the number would increase this year,” Shazeen commented.

While more than three decades have passed since the first property under Sun Siyam Resorts opened in the Maldives, the hospitality brand has achieved various strides including being recognized among the companies with the highest number of participations in blood donation camps in the last four years.

In a special interview to ‘Sun Online’, Adil highlighted the development of Olhuveli as a tourist property across the years, including being the venue of the longest pool in the Maldives. Adil also highlighted the expansion of the resort’s villas to 465, which he noted was a significant development as well.

“Visitors will receive experience of three islands from the resort. The location also makes Olhuveli a perfect destination for diving and other excursions, with the manta point being a hot spot among tourists,” Adil added.

The properties under Sun Siyam Resorts’ portfolio have won several accolades, as recent as earlier this month when Siyam World Maldives was ranked fourth among Asia’s “Best of the Best Hotels” in TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards. The property was also ranked first on TripAdvisor’s Maldives-exclusive ranking as well.

Besides Siyam World, Sun Siyam Iru Fushi was recognized with a Readers’ Favourite Overseas Hotel award at the Travel and Leisure China Travel Awards 2024.

Sun Siyam Group’s annual blood donation camp aims to address the difficulties faced by the Maldivian thalassaemia community.

While the camp launched at Olhuvelhi, events under the camp will be held across the remaining Sun Siyam Resorts’ properties until late June.
