President Muizzu heads to UK to kick off tourism campaign with Liverpool FC

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday evening, April 1st, has departed for Liverpool, United Kingdom to participate in the commencement of a tourism promotion campaign.

This campaign is a collaboration between the Liverpool Football Club (LFC) and Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/ Visit Maldives).

The partnership was announced earlier on March 13th, with MMPRC announcing its partnership as the "Official Tourist Destination Partner" for Liverpool FC.

MMPRC had reported this collaboration would launch a global destination promotion campaign spanning three and half years, with the main objective to amplify the brand visibility and increase tourist arrivals.

During the visit, President Muizzu will meet with Maldivian students and visit the AXA Training Centre, where he will observe best practices in football training and coaching. According to the President's Office, the aim for this visit is to explore ways to incorporate high-performance training methods in the Maldives.

Muizzu will also visit Leeds University and Leeds Town Hall, where he is set to meet with the Councilor of Leeds.

Besides this, relevant ministers are also expected to meet with senior officials from Red Way and LFC Academy to discuss joint marketing initiatives to promote tourism and strengthen the partnership between the Maldives and Liverpool FC.

The president's entourage consists of Minister of Tourism Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu, and the Managing Director of MMPRC Ibrahim Shiuree along with other relevant senior government officials.

President Muizzu is expected to conclude his visit and return to Male' on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

MMPRC earlier said that its partnership with Liverpool FC is poised to attract more than 100,000 additional tourists to the Maldives this year which would translate to an estimate USD 200 million in tourism receipts.

With an investment of USD 2.5 million on the campaign, the return is projected to increase 20 times the initial investment each year.
