Hulhumendhoo designated under Maamendhoo’s jurisdiction

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Saturday, has designated Hulhumendhoo as part GA. Maamendhoo.

The decision was formalized through amendments announced by Presidential Decree No. 07/2025, made under the Decentralization Act’s Section 56-1, subsection (a), which grants the President the authority to designate areas for both city and island councils.

As such, the newly formed chart of Maamendhoo has now been codified and published in the Government Gazette.

Maamendhoo Council had requested President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to include Hulhumendhoo under Maamendhoo jurisdiction during the President’s visit to the island in January.

The President, on Saturday, allocated 325.5 hectares from HA. Kelaa for the development of two resorts in line with a presidential pledge.

No further details regarding the project have been disclosed.

President Muizzu has designated numerous uninhabited islands under the jurisdiction of inhabited islands – to be used for purposes desired by the residents of the islands. This is also a presidential pledge of his.
