Ahmed Nareesh, the former deputy mayor of Male’ City, has been appointed to an advisory role at the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts – a position that is of the same level as a government minister.
A senior government official confirmed to Sun that Nareesh was appointed as an advisor to Ibrahim ‘Aswad’ Waheed, the youth minister, on Thursday.
The appointment came a day after he resigned from his role as the deputy mayor of Male’. He had said at the time that he resigned from the Male’ City Council “after being given the chance to serve the country and the people in another capacity.”
A former TV presenter, Nareesh won the Central Maafannu seat in the council elections in 2021 – in which the then-opposition PPM achieved a surprise sweeping victory. He was elected as the deputy mayor on June 21, 2021. Nareesh had served as acting mayor after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned from his mayoral role after winning the 2023 presidential election.
In his resignation letter, Nareesh praised President Muizzu, describing him as a leader who has the quality to work together with people, including those of different political affiliations, in order to achieve quick results.
He also expressed gratitude to Adam Azim, the incumbent male’ City mayor.
