Former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom states the current administration is unable to investigate cases of head of state-owned companies who have resigned following corruption allegations as such an investigation would bring up President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s name.
Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed, who was initially appointed the managing director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC) after the current administration assumed office, resigned at the face allegations of corruption in the award of housing from Hulhumale’.
Meanwhile, Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, who was initially appointed Fenaka Corporation, had also resigned amid allegations of corruption.
Ibrahim Faisal, who was the initially appointed Tourism Minister, was dismissed from his post. Although no reason was disclosed for Faisal’s dismissal, pro-government activists have commented that the President will not allow for corruption and in this regard, will take action necessary without consideration to who it is.
Speaking at a PNF event last night, Yameen sharply criticized President Muizzu and his administration. He highlighted that despite the President's public assurances that citizens' rights would not be violated, the reality has proven otherwise.
The former president, citing several instances of corruption that have emerged under the current administration, accused President Muizzu of leading these activities.
On this note, he described MVR 65 million incurred by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) last year to lease various items as a “huge act of corruption” spearheaded by President Muizzu.
He questioned why the current administration has not investigated any individuals who have been accused of corruption, particularly highlighting the names of Muaz, Fazul and Faisal.
“These individuals have been sidelined because they have paid the required sum of money gained from corruption they have carried out,” he added.
Yameen said money laundering charges can be raised against each of these individuals.
Yameen expressed concern over the fact that none of these individuals have been summoned by any investigative bodies despite this, He said Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef does not have the guts to investigate these cases as President Muizzu’s name will come up.
“Why have none of these individuals been summoned before an investigative body? Where is the Prosecutor General? Does he suspect President Muizzu’s name will come up in the investigation if he does? 100 percent, there will be no name other than that of (President) Muizzu,” he said.
Yameen said the President cannot say he will not do anything that infringes the rights of the people without investigating the cases involving these individuals.
“Then there is the Prosecutor General. He does not have the guts to order these things. The Parliament is next. The Parliament’s hands and legs are completely chained,” he critiqued.
Yameen had repeatedly alleged corruption during the current administration, which he claims was at the direct instructions of President Muizzu. The current administration, which has denied these allegations, has said it would not allow the slightest chance for corruption.
