President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Thursday, has urged the public to embrace Islamic principles and respect Maldivian values; something he said would provide spiritual fulfilment and prosperity.
The President made the appeal in a special address on the occasion of National Identity Revival Day.
In this regard, he emphasized the need to revive the concept of national identity among Maldivians by integrating intellectual and modern principles, along with the use of contemporary technology. He reaffirmed his commitment to preserving national identity, guided by the principles of Islam and the teachings of the Holy Quran, in order to prevent harmful influences and promote positive societal values.
President Muizzu highlighted that a nation's cultural framework is shaped by its worldview, adding Islamic moral teachings govern the customs and traditions of the Maldives. He stressed that embracing and upholding Islam has been a key element in defining Maldivian national identity.
The President also pointed out the significance of National Identity Revival Day, which coincides with Ramadan this year, underscoring the pivotal role of Islam in shaping the nation's identity. He credited Islam for upholding human dignity, deterring misconduct, fostering respect for leadership, promoting contributions to religious infrastructure, and instilling values such as honesty and regular prayers within the community. He also referred to accounts from foreign travelers, who described the strong sense of compassion, empathy, and peace among Maldivians. Additionally, the President cited historical moments when the nation united against foreign invaders, drawing strength from their unwavering faith in defending Islam.
President Muizzu described national identity as something deeply ingrained in the conscience of Maldivians, shaped by millennia of shared experiences, cultures, population growth, and common beliefs, all of which have contributed to the continuity of the nation's existence.
He concluded his address by affirming the great importance of National Identity Revival Day, which he considered the foundation of the Maldives' nationhood.
He urged the nation to collectively commit to upholding the principles of Islam and Maldivian values and prayed for the continued prosperity and spiritual well-being of the country.
