The island council of Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo on Sunday confirmed that more than half of the island's houses reported damages to their furniture in the recent rainfall.

With weather conditions worsened since late last week, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Sunday announced the islands of Kaafu atoll Himmafushi, Huraa, Guraidhoo and Thulusdhoo among the affected.

Many Thulusdhoo residences reported of rainwater floods and damages to interiors, including furniture and appliances.

The council's president Aslam Moosa, while speaking with 'Sun' Online on Sunday said that majority of the island was 'under water' the previous night, and added water levels subsided around 03:30hrs on early Sunday morning.

Aslam added that the island had suffered damages that were not immediately recoverable, noting it would take over two months to overcome them.

"Furniture from more than 50 percent of the homes have been damaged," he commented.

Adding the general public was assisted by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officers and council authority in draining the water, Aslam added efforts included digging moats to connect to the sea to drain the rain water out of the island as well.

NDMA meanwhile confirmed the authority had been working with various council bodies of affected islands.
