President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared Sunday, March 2, 2025 a public holiday owing to bad weather conditions.
The president's decision was confirmed by Heena Waleed, the Spokesperson of the President's Office via a post on X on Sunday dawn.
The decision comes following non-stop rainfall across major parts of the Maldives on Saturday resulting in floods and other damages to livelihoods.
The roads of Male' City have been flooded with rain water as well, while officers of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have been dispatched to pump the water out.
The President's Office Spokesperson previously said relevant authorities were working together in draining the water and installing sand-bad barriers.
"All relevant government authorities have been working together to provide relief, while monitoring the situation closely to ensure mitigation of the impact the public face due to the rain," Heena said.
The Maldives Meteorological Center have forecast prevailing bad weather conditions for the next few days, though it projects the conditions to subside by Monday.
