The Parliament on Tuesday passed legislature to amend the Decentralization Act so that members of the Women’s Development Committee (WDCs) receive Ramadan allowance.

The government bill, sponsored by Central Machangolhi MP Ahmed Zameer, was presented at the Parliament and sent to the Decentralization Committee for review last week.

In addition to giving WDC members Ramadan allowance, the bill is also designed to have them paid salaries as opposed to a monthly allowance, and to make them eligible for financial schemes.

The bill passed the floor vote with the unanimous consensus of 72 parliamentarians on Tuesday morning.

The amendment comes after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, during a recent visit to ADh. Dhangethi, said that members of WDCs will begin receiving Ramadan allowance this year.

He also said that members of WDCs had been treated unfairly in the past, and that his administration would change that.
