Ambassadors should not treat their deployment to foreign missions as a chance for an overseas vacation, says Mohamed Abbas, a lawmaker from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).

Abbas, the representative for the Velidhoo constituency, made the remark during the debate on Tuesday morning on a report presented by the Foreign Relations Committee regarding the appointment of non-residential ambassadors to several foreign countries and organizations.

Joining the debate, Abbas said that ambassadors must engage in efforts to boost the Maldivian economy in their overseas missions, and must do everything they can to promote tourism.

“As I said before, these ambassadors must not treat it as a holiday destination,” he said.

Abbas’ remarks appear directed at criticism regarding a perceived mismatch in results produced by some diplomatic missions overseas.
