Male’ Mayor Adam Azim states efforts are ongoing to develop a new office building for Male’ City Council in order to consolidate all services of the Council under one roof.

Various departments of Male’ City Council are operated at different locations.

One such department, situated at the Green Building, was burned down beyond use in the fire that broke out in the building on Thursday morning.

The department oversaw crucial documents related to Male’ residents such as birth certificates, death certificates and registries of properties.

Speaking to Sun regarding the damage from the fire, Mayor Azim noted that various departments of Male’ City Council are operated at some eight locations. Thus, he said the first target he set after assuming mayorship was the development of a separate building to consolidate all services provided by the Council under one roof.

He noted that efforts on this front, are already ongoing, with rendering of the building and engineering drawings completed. A contractor has also been found for the project, he added.

“Next is awarding [the project],” he stressed.

Sharing details of the fire, Mayor Azim said such an incident for a party that does not have its own building would pose significant difficulties to its operations and staff.

He cited his biggest priorities as mayor as capacity building of staff and infrastructure development.

“Even during my campaign, I have stated that Male’ City Council’s operations are underway at different locations. That they need to be consolidated. Hence, efforts in this trajectory are ongoing,” he said.

Mayor Azim did not provide any further details regarding the new office building for the time being. However, he assured that efforts were ongoing concerning the development of a new office building.

Notably, efforts to organize Male’ City Council’s documents that were salvaged in the fire are ongoing at Galolhu Madharusa’s hall.

The Council has stated that efforts to recover the lost documents will begin once it is determined which documents are missing, a process that can only occur once the organization is complete.

As per Mayor Azim, the Council has resolved to ensure the safety of the documents even in the event of a future fire as one of its biggest aims.
