Police: No complaints received on violence against a suspect at Hoarafushi Police Station

Maldives Police Service, on Tuesday, said they have not received a complaint despite allegations on social media claiming an individual taken into custody at Hoarafushi Police Station was blindfolded and subjected to mental and physical violence.

A viral video on social media alleges that the man shown in the video was subject to police brutality. In this regard, the man’s leg is shown in the video which is severely bruised.

“Today, (I) am ashamed to say that Commissioner of Police is a son of Hoarafushi,” the post read.

Police commented on the allegations via message to the media on Tuesday. They noted that a 30-year-old Maldivian was arrested from Hoarafushi on the night of November 27th on suspicions of threatening and using foul language against police officers while intoxicated.

As per the Police, the man was granted conditional release when presented before the court for a remand hearing on November 28th.

They stressed that no complaints have been filed with the Police regarding the suspect being subjected to violence while in police brutality.

 

Police strongly encouraged to file a complaint in line with due process if there is such a complaint. They also assured that the Police will fully cooperate in an investigation in this trajectory.
