The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel said on Thursday, that the world today needs a United Nations bold enough to take action against Israel for its continued genocide.
In his address to commemorate the 79 years since the establishment of the United Nations, the Foreign Minister said the world currently needs a just authority that can put its words into action. Dr. Khaleel added that the United Nations needs to take bold steps to stop acts of environmental damage, make stronger efforts to combat climate change and interrupt any attempts of the infringement of human rights.
Besides this, Dr. Khaleel urged to take action against Israel in accordance with the values of the UN.
“[The world needs] a reformed, all-inclusive and representative United Nations that address to all global concerns without discrimination,” Khaleel said.
The Maldives became a member of the United Nations in 1965.
In his address, Dr. Khaleel said that the Maldives always accepted the multilateralism approach maintained by the UN, and highlighted the organization’s pivotal role in the development of a small island developing state (SIDS) like the Maldives.
The minister further highlighted the efforts led by the Maldives in representing the plight of the SIDS at the United Nations and in the wider international arena, advocating on combatting climate change, protection of human rights and sustainable development. He however, highlighted that the resource limitation and the financial disparity has challenged the UN’s efforts in the said causes.
Despite this, the minister expressed optimism that the United Nations will achieve its objectives.
