Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution on Sunday as the southwest monsoon becomes active over the Maldivian regions.

Both the Maldives Metrological Service (Met Office) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued advisory statements.

Met Office has forecasted strong winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour in northern and central Maldives and 13 to 23 miles per hour in the south with gusts up to 45 5o 55 miles per hour on average over the next five days.

Heavy squally showers and thunderstorms in addition to wave surges during high tides can also be expected during this period.

Notably, Met Office has issued two white alerts; one from Haa Alifu to Thaa Atoll and the other from Laamu Atoll to Addu City. Both alerts are in effect until 19:45pm on Sunday evening and warn of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

NDMA has urged the public to take precautionary measures to safeguard their property and belongings including preparing for possible flooding by taking proactive steps to block entry of water and reinforcing roofs.

Both authorities have especially cautioned seafarers who have been highly urged to check weather alerts before setting out on trips.

NDMA also advised to limit sea travel to essential purposes only and in such cases to ensure that all safety equipment is in optimal condition, continuously monitor weather updates, and equip vessels with fully charged communication devices.
