President Muizzu announces 20-year National Development Masterplan

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Tuesday, has announced his decision to pursue a 20-year National Development Masterplan for the Maldives at the recommendation of his cabinet.

The President announced the decision via a publicized video message.

As per the President, the Masterplan is intended to be completed within a year and will involve the participation of all citizens, including input from political parties, civil society groups, experts, and other stakeholders.

It will have legal backing, with a specifically designed law to support it, said the President.

He further detailed discussions at the island level, involving civil society groups, sports figures, political parties, and other respected individuals, is set to commence soon.

“We will hold very organized and detailed discussions with civil society groups, sports figures, political parties, and other respected individuals in the nation that do not belong to the political party,” he said.

The President noted that foreign experts in various fields would partake in the efforts to formulate the plan.

“Experts from various fields will participate in this, including the economic sector, social sector, governance sector, special planning sector, and urban development sector. Hopefully, some foreign experts will also participate, he said.

Despite foreign experts participating, President Muizzu stressed the efforts to formulate the plan will be led by Maldivians who are patriotic and committed to protecting the national language and nationalism.

The current administration is also working on several long-term projects which include a 20-year plan to develop Maldives’ main airport, Velana International Airport, which was inaugurated by the President back in January and the mega-housing project, Rasmale’ which is being carried out by reclaiming Fushidhiggaru Falhu.
