The Elections Commission (EC) has once again decided to dissolve Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).

The commission confirmed this decision on X on Sunday, noting the party lacks the legally required minimum of 3,000 registered members.

Earlier on February 22, 2023, the commission gave notice to the party to enroll members sufficient for the party's legitimacy.

Civil Court in its decision on February 13th this year, held the commission's decision was unlawful.

The court said EC did not specify instructions in its notice to MRM. The court further said that EC failed to indicate any unprocessed forms in its notice while it had reported the MRM's membership stood at 2,981 when the commission issued its notice.

The commission decided to appeal a day after Civil Court's judgement.

Additionally, Civil Court ordered EC to settle MVR 50,000 to MRM, which the party incurred in legal fees. The court demanded EC settle this amount with the court within seven days from the date of judgement.

The Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) was founded by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 2019 after he exited the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
