Speaker: Maldives committed to partnership with China ‘for a prosperous future’

The Maldives is dedicated to partnerships with China and other nations in pursuit of a prosperous and sustainable future, says Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

He made the remark on Wednesday in his address at the 2024 Interregional Seminar on SDGs for Parliaments of Developing Countries underway in Beijing.

Speaking on the theme of "Aligning Development Strategies for Inclusive Global Economic Growth," Abdul Raheem underscored the importance of recognizing each nation’s unique resources and challenges in the global economy.

He highlighted the specific hurdles and opportunities faced by small island nations like the Maldives amid economic globalization.

He said that sustainability is at the core of the Maldives' identity, and resilience is essential to its way of life.

“The Maldives faces specific challenges and opportunities. Our economic strategies include our democratic values and sustainability. As President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated, “sustainability has been our ethos. Resilience has been our way of life”,” he said, referring to President Muizzu’s address at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Abdul Raheem stressed that inclusive globalization requires a commitment to sustainability and international collaboration.

He also reaffirmed the Maldives' dedication to partnerships with China and other nations in pursuit of a prosperous and sustainable future.

“Our commitment to sustainability is evident in our collaborations, particularly with China, who’s support has advanced projects,” he said.

“The Maldives looks forward to consolidate the partnership with China and other nations for a prosperous future.”

In closing, Abdul Raheem thanked the Chinese government for its hospitality and all participants for their commitment to the dialogue.

“Together, let us strive for an inclusive global economy,” he said.

The 2024 Interregional Seminar on SDGs for Parliaments of Developing Countries is being held in Beijing from August 18-23.

Abdul Raheem is accompanied in the trip by Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau, Vilimale’ MP Mohamed Ismail, Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, and Parliament’s Secretary General Fathimath Niusha.
