MP Thoriq shares FAM’s state, affirms to probe negligence and take action

Picture of inside FAM building shared by Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq who previously served as the president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM).

Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thoriq who previously served as the president of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has shared pictures of the inside of FAM Building on social media while affirming commitment to probe the negligence and subsequently take action.

Thoriq had been a prominent football player in the Maldives.

He shared the state of FAM via a post on X on Tuesday night which shows a worn-down FAM Building, with its ceiling near the stage of collapsing. Broken appliances are scattered on the ground, surrounded by discarded items such as jerseys.

Despite the current state of FAM, Thoriq stressed its incumbent President Bassam Adeel Jaleel and the current members of the executive committee are contesting in the election announced to elect new officials to the association.

Thoriq had filed his candidacy to compete for FAM’s presidency back in January. However, he had been rejected by FAM.

He had also led efforts to dismiss Bassam from his post last year.

While Bassam remains FAM’s President, many have called for his resignation amid heavy allegations of corruption and embezzlement of funds from the Association. He has been charged with embezzlement and money laundering and has been barred from traveling until the end of his trial.

Bassam has also been suspended by International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for a period of nine months.

Thoriq was previously elected FAM’s President. However, he lost the post following the resignation of executive committee members. Back then, Bassan had been serving as the Association’s Secretary General.
