The parliament on Monday has approved the decision to counsel removal of all Tax Appeal Tribunal members with one exception to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The parliament’s decision comes after reviewing an allegation of misconduct against the tribunal, and approved dismissal of the body’s president along with three other members. They are;

  • President of the Tribunal, Mohamed Munawar Ali
  • Deputy President Hussain, Zaidhan Jaleel
  • Member, Khadheeja Naeem
  • Member, Ahmed Ashraf

All the members were appointed to the tribunal during the former government led by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Dismissal of these members were approved at Monday’s sitting with 63 member votes while 10 voted against it.

The tribunal’s member Ismail Sajid, who brought the government body’s misconduct to parliament’s attention, is the only exception. The relevant parliament committee earlier held Sajid’s intention to inform the misconduct was not ill-founded.

Members of the tribunal face allegations of coercion and illicit enrichment, while the state body was operated at a larger space than required, which the committee claimed was incurring heavy state expenses.
