Malaysia’s national carrier, Malaysia Airlines has decided to resume operations to the Maldives.
In this regard, the first flight of Malaysia Airlines is set to touch down in Velana International Airport (VIA) on Thursday morning.
The operator of VIA, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said the airline will operate flights to the Maldives seven days a week for which a Boeing 737–800 aircraft will be utilized.
A special ceremony is planned for Thursday morning to welcome the first flight. The ceremony will be attended by senior officials from the Tourism Ministry, MACL, Malaysia Airlines and Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Cooperations.
Malaysia Airlines last operated to the Maldives in 2017.
A large number of Maldivians reside in Malaysia. Airlines such as Air Asia and Batik Air already conduct flights between Maldives and Malaysia.
More airlines are scheduled to commence operations to the Maldives within the course of this year. In this regard, Middle East and North Africa’s largest low-cost carrier, Air Arabia, is scheduled to commence direct flights between Maldives and UAE’s Sharjah on October 27th.
