Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has appealed for the support of Maldivian citizens in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to safeguard the nation's independence, sovereignty, peace, and harmony.

He made the appeal in a video message on the occasion of Maldives’ 59th Independence Day.

In his message, the Vice President described freedom as the greatest blessing for a nation and essential to realizing the aspirations of the citizens.

He spoke regarding Maldives’ long heritage of freedom and in this trajectory emphasized that valiant Maldivians stood to defend the country every time the freedom of the country was challenged while noting the sacrifices made by the heroic individuals who fought for the country's freedom before them.

VP Latheef also prayed for Maldives to always be blessed with independence and prosperity.

Maldives became a British protectorate in the 19th century.

The country gained total independence from the British on July 26, 1965, following the signing of The Declaration of Independence by then-Maldivian Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir.

Henceforth, Maldives marks July 26th as its Independence Day.
