VP Latheef attends Rising Nations Gala Dinner alongside influential global leaders

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef attended the ‘Rising Nations Gala Dinner’, held on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81).

This year's event was held under the theme ‘Celebrating the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise: From Ambition to Implementation’.

The theme primarily seeks to underscore the importance of translating policy commitments and declarations on sea-level rise into concrete and practical measures implemented on the ground.

The ‘Rising Nations’ initiative is a dedicated international coalition established to advocate for the protection of the sovereignty, culture, heritage, and rights of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate-induced sea-level rise. The initiative's Gala Dinner provides a key platform for world leaders to come together, demonstrate their support for these nations, and mobilize the assistance required to address the challenges they face.

Reflecting on the event, VP Latheef emphasized that translating commitments to address sea-level rise into tangible action is vital to safeguarding the islands, people, and future of low-lying archipelagic nations such as the Maldives.

During the event, VP Latheef held discussions with senior officials from major global powers, including France and Türkiye, on strengthening international cooperation in efforts to address climate change.
