Odor control systems being used at sewer pump stations to combat foul odor

MWSC has begun using modern equipment to combat foul odor at its sewer pump stations.

In this regard, the first odor control systems were installed at the number four pump station near IGMH and the number two pump station. 

MWSC said the existing air filtering mechanisms at the stations have been replaced with much more advanced odor control systems which will reduce foul order by up to 99 percent, creating a fresher and more sustainable environment.

The company said the upgrade will be extended to all pumping stations in Male’ by the end of 2025, followed by those in Hulhumale’.

Additionally, solar panels will be installed at stations with the space to produce electricity required to power the equipment.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the odor control system at Number Four Pump Station, MWSC’s Managing Director Abdulla Matheen said the new odor systems were installed following various research by the company to resolve foul odor in the areas where sewer pump stations are based.

“This is an important step forward in our efforts to modernize the company and establish environment-friendly resources required to provide our services more sustainably,” he added.

Matheen further attributed the installation of the odor control system to a highly prioritized initiative by MWSC in achieving President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s aim of establishing a pleasant environment for residents of Male'.
