Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail has said the prospect of the current opposition party will be appealing for the youths with new policies.

Fayyaz said this while speaking at SSTV’s ‘Baaru4’ program on Monday this week, and highlighted on the issues that hindered the party’s activities.

He said that while the party faced recent defeats owing to its diminished strength after a fallout between its key leaders, MDP is still a strong political party.

Fayyaz also stressed the party requires rectification in several aspects, chief of which is to ensure its ideals and members do not blindly follow any particular leader.

The MDP Chairperson also said the opposition’s decision to refrain from actively criticizing the current administration the way it did for former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration, is no indication the party has weakened.

Fayyaz added that none of the parties have been successful in reaching out to the youths.

“Youths are significantly detached while the public strongly resents politics and politicians,” he added.

In this regard, Fayyaz also said the public’s opinion about politicians generally are not desirable with most people viewing them either as crooks or self-centered. He added that the image of politicians is no longer appealing for the public, while the political arena itself is in turmoil.

He pledged MDP will be reshaped as a trustworthy and ideal party for the public and members in future.

Fayyaz also said his, and the party’s political efforts will prioritize regaining the public’s respect back to political leaders and activities. He added the party was still reeling from the aftermath of forcibly overthrowing a tyrannical government.
