A youth has been arrested from Male’ City on suspicion of attacking his girlfriend with a knife.

The suspect, a 22-year-old Maldivian man, was remanded in custody by the Criminal Court for 30 days.

As per the court order, the suspect has been detained on 26 previous occasions.

Police submitted investigative statements, SOCOs' report and medicolegal documents as evidence against the suspect.

Criminal Court said it was ordering the suspect’s remand due to sufficient evidence warranting suspicion that he had acted violently in addition to the possibility of him causing further harm to his girlfriend if he is released.

The prosecution, at court, has said two major criminal charges can be brought against the suspect.

Meanwhile, the suspect denied attacking the woman, claiming it had been an angry argument between him and her. He also claimed the knife that was found in his bag was one he uses when he goes diving.
