Police have arrested two Bangladeshis while in possession of drugs during a counter-narcotics operation carried out in Male’ City.

The operation was a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Department and the Intelligence Department.

Police said a Male’ apartment was searched as part of the operation based on suspicions that drugs were being sold at the apartment.

A total of 278 rubber packets and a juice-petty seized bag containing substances believed to be drugs were discovered during the search.

Two Bangladeshi males – a 22-year-old and a 33-year-old – were arrested in connection to the case.

Police said they have both been remanded in custody for 15 days by the Criminal Court.

The case is under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Department.

Drug remains the most prevalent social issue in the Maldives which any administration has yet to successfully address. Dozens of suspects are arrested in connection to drug-related cases annually.
