WHO's 77th session of World Health Assembly begins

The 77th session of World Health Organization (WHO)'s World Health Assembly has begun at Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday.

Ministry of Health confirms representatives of 194 countries will be taking part in the assembly, which will last until Sunday next week.

The Maldivian delegation to the World Health Assembly this year is led by the Health Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, whoo is accompanied by the Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed, and the high-level staff of the Health Ministry and Permanent Mission of Maldives to the UN Office at Geneva.

Besides this, Minister Khaleel is set to deliver the official statement during the plenary session of the assembly on behalf of the Maldives government. The topic of his address will be "WHO at 77: All for Health, Health for All".

World Health Assembly will convene to address a diverse range of global health challenges and initiatives.

Discussions will focus on topics such as;

  • Maternal and child health
  • Climate change's impact on health
  • Antimicrobial resistance
  • Universal health coverage
  • Infectious disease prevention
  • Sustainable financing

Additionally, attention will be given to emergency preparedness and response, financing of health programs, and strengthening health systems.

Overall, the ministry added, the assembly will serve as a platform to advance global health goals and strategies for a healthier and more resilient world.
