Orange alert for strong winds in central Maldives

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange alert for strong winds in central Maldives, as the country continues to experience intense monsoon rains.

The orange alert was issued for the central region from B. Atoll to V. Atoll, from 09:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday.

The weather agency forecasts heavy rain for the region, with winds of 34-40 miles per hour and gusts of 60 miles per hour.

Seas are expected to be very rough.

It marks the sixth time for the agency to issue an orange alert this month – the third highest level of weather alert.

There is also a yellow alert in place for heavy rain and thunderstorms, for northern Maldives, from HA. Atoll to B. Atoll, from 08:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Maldives Meteorological Service forecasts scattered rain with isolated squally showers across the country for the next 24 hours, with winds blowing in the southwest and westerly direction at 18 – 28 miles per hour, and gusts of up to 55 – 60 miles per hour during showers.

Seas are expected to be generally rough becoming very rough during showers, with waves of 6-9 feet.

The weather agency has advised all, especially seafarers, to exercise caution, and take necessary measures against strong winds, rough seas, and swells.

The current rains have resulted in flooding in some parts of the Maldives.
