Former Makunudhoo MP Dr. Anara Naeem and her husband have secured seats in Sunday’s parliamentary election.

Anara contested for Huraa constituency as an independent candidate after her loss in ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s primary. Her earlier constituency, Makunudhoo, was contested by her husband, Adam Shafeeg.

Huraa constituency’s preliminary results show that Anara secured 583 votes so far. Her closest competitor, PNC’s Abdulla Waris secured 402 votes. The remaining candidates – MDP’s Shathir Abdul Rahman and Aminath Rula Athif who contested with PNF’s endorsement – received 283 votes and 124 votes respectively.

The results place Anara ahead by over a hundred votes.

Makunudhoo constituency’s preliminary results show that Shafeeq secured 1,000 votes so far; a landslide amount in comparison to his closest competitor, Adhaalath Party’s Imran Abdulla who secured 402 votes. Incumbent MP Mohamed Raee who contested for reelection on MDP’s ticket secured 292 votes.

Notably, incumbent Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem defended his seat in the parliamentary election while his son, Ibrahim Naufal, who contested for Mulah constituency also won.

Ruling PNC has secured the parliament’s supermajority in Sunday’s election – securing over 70 seats through the coalition they have formed with Maldives National Party (MNP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).
