New measure checks authenticity of garages

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has begun a new measure of assessing authenticity of the garages referred in automotive registration in Greater Male' region.

The ministry said it was receiving multiple complaints of using garage details to register vehicles without the consent of the garage owners.

For vehicles with more than two wheels, applicants are required to submit a no objection letter of the garage owner where the vehicle is supposed to be kept, the national identity card of the owner, and documents attesting the garage is a registered property.

The ministry will authenticate the documents including the no objection letter for vehicle registration, and monitor if the registration process falls within relevant laws and regulations. Additionally, the authority will assess if the garages referred in vehicle registration provides sufficient space for the vehicle to park.

The current administration, led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, promised adequate parking venues will be provided before it moved forward with issuing violation stickers. This decision resulted an exponential surge in illegal parkings across the Greater Male' region.

On Sunday, last week, Maldives Police Service announced the authority will be taking action against vehicles parked illegally effective next Thursday. The authority added that vehicles parked illegally will either be towed or fined.
