President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to expand the airport in Shaviyani atoll Funadhoo.
President Dr. Muizzu made the announcement on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, during his visit to the island; which is part of the series of visits to upper-northern atolls.
While highlighting the planned infrastructural development plans for the island, Dr. Muizzu promised the airport's runway will be stretched to accommodate increased flight movements.
"[Plans include] extension of the airport runway to allow for larger aircraft, among other projects. As such, we promise to expand the airport according to the public's wishes," Dr. Muizzu said.
Besides the airport expansion project, Dr. Muizzu said the top priority for the island is to improve Funadhoo's hospital in a comprehensive manner.
He further pledged to develop eco-tourism in the island as well.
"So, we promise to expand the airport, reclaim additional land, improve the harbor, and redevelop the roads. I would like to announce that this administration has planned these initiatives for Funadhoo public," he added.
The current runway of Funadhoo airport measures 1,200 meters in length and 30 meters in width. The taxiway measures 90 meters and the apron dimensions measure 150 meters by 50 meters.
The first test flight made landing at Funadhoo airport on January 24, 2020.
Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) developed the island's airport.
