Male’ City Council, on Wednesday, has decided to shift several major projects undertaken by the council to Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.

The council, at the 130th meeting of the fourth session held on Wednesday, decided on multiple proposals put forth regarding its projects.

The President’s Office’s Principal Secretary to the President on Corporate Development Mohamed Shahid who had been in charge of the council’s projects earlier, had participated in Wednesday’s meeting during which he proposed to handover some of the projects to the relevant ministry to expedite them.

“When valuation is done for each project, they are projects worth over MVR 100 million. Although the council does not incur any expenses, there are many factors that need to be technically considered when implementing projects of this scale,” Shahid had said regarding why he had proposed to shift the projects to the ministry.

However, Shahid said no changes will be brought to the agreements made pertaining to these projects.

“Without making any changes to the terms already agreed by the council regarding these projects, we are temporarily shifting the management of these projects to the relevant authority in order to expedite the projects,” he said.

“If the contractor awarded the projects cannot commence work on these projects within a maximum of six months, their (management) will be shifted back to the council. If the council wishes to make any changes, they will have this opportunity then,” he added.

Hulhumale’ constituency councilor Ibrahim Shujau proposed to pass the proposal as put forth. The council, where the ruling coalition holds the majority, approved the proposal as put forth with the support of 10 out of 100 councilors who participated in the meeting. One councilor had abstained from voting.

Therewith, the projects will be shifted to the ministry. Acting Male’ Mayor Ahmed Nareesh has instructed to undertake the administrative work regarding the shift.

No details regarding these projects were disclosed at Wednesday’s meeting.

The shift comes after the election of opposition MDP’s candidate Adam Azim as Male’ Mayor in the by-election held last Saturday following the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from the post. Azim will take oath of office on Monday.
