Azima submits candidacy form for Male’ mayoral election

Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor, the candidate of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) coalition for the Male’ mayoral by-election, has submitted her candidacy form to the Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday.

She submitted the form to EC late Tuesday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters previously, Azima has expressed her wish to continue her public service.

She added that it was time for Male’ to get a mayor who would work with the government.

“President [Dr. Mohamed] Muizzu has made some strong commitments to the residents of Male’. I believe that it is therefore the right time for a mayor who will work with the government and who knows how to work hard, in order to solve the issues facing Male’,” she said.

In the initial statement announcing her intention to contest the by-election – Azima said the individual who becomes Male’ Mayor must be an honest person who has the capacity to bring true development to Male’ City. She also said the individual must also implement the strategic action plan formulated for the purpose by then-mayor, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

“The guarantee I give is that I will remain committed to working hard day and night," she added. 

The position of Male’ City mayor became vacant after President Muizzu resigned to take office as the Maldivian president in November.

The deadline to submit candidacy for the Male' mayoral by-election is Wednesday.

The by-election will be held on January 13.
