Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to the President’s Office.
Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) confirmed that Azima has already begun work in the post.
Azima previously contested the 2012 Male' City mayoral election on a PNC ticket but lost. She later worked as a lawyer in a family court case involving President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The Prosecutor General’s Office recently dropped the money‑laundering charges filed against Azima in connection with the MMPRC scandal, as well as charges of providing false information to an official authority.
After reviewing the case, the PG Office withdrew the charges on the grounds that Azima had no remaining legal interest in pursuing them, and because the Supreme Court had already found her not guilty on the original file related to the alleged offence.
Azima Shakoor is a veteran public official who served as the country’s first female Attorney General across three different administrations between 2007 and 2013. She later held key ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Legal Affairs under President Abdulla Yameen and Minister of Gender, Family and Human Rights.
