The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has said that he will soon announce a project to provide opportunities for imams of mosques in Maldives who have Masters degrees to obtain PhDs from a foreign university.

Shaheem said this in a post on social media today.

He said he would also provide opportunities for imams to receive training in countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

Although special training for imams has been conducted to some extent in Maldives, there are many complaints that such opportunities have not been created adequately.

Shaheem, who was also the Islamic Minister in the government of former President Abdulla Yameen, took over the post at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Presidential Office yesterday.

He has previously served as Chancellor of the Islamic University and Dean of Villa College.

Dr Shaheem holds a Bachelor's degree in Islamic Sharia from the Islamic University of Medina and a PhD from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.
