47,000 apply for reregistration for election runoff

Voting ongoing in the first round of the 2023 Presidential elections held on September 9, 2023.

While the period that was set to apply for reregistration ended yesterday afternoon, the Elections Commission (EC) has said that over 47000 people have applied.

42867 people applied for reregistration for the first round of the presidential elections which were held on September 9.

Vice Chairman of EC Ismail Habeeb said in a tweet that out of the over 47000 people that have applied for reregistration more than 19000 have been processed as of yesterday and that EC is working to verify over 27000 forms.

“The Election Commission will open the list of re-registered voters for complaints as soon as the validity of the forms is confirmed. The list will be published in the Government Gazette, posted on the Election Commission's website and will be shared with the candidates and the political parties the candidates are representing,” Habeeb said.

Habeeb said that most reregistration forms were sent in by President Ibrahim Solih’s MDP and Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s PPM/PNC coalition, both of whom are contesting the second round of the presidential elections.

The second round of the presidential elections will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023.

As of the last election, 95,695 re-registration forms have been submitted for the 2018 presidential election, out of which 78964 forms were accepted and reregistered.

283,272 people were eligible to vote in the first round of this year's election while 282,803 people will be eligible to vote in the second round, this includes 403 youths who will be voting for the first time.
