Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)’s leader and Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed has expressed concern over the rise in physical and emotional abuse of children within the Maldivian community.

He expressed his concern in an address on Wednesday, on occasion of Children’s Day.

In his address, Siyam said children are important to each and every society, and are the mirrors one looks into to see the future of a nation.

He described the protection of children and providing them with a good upbringing as a national endeavor.

Expressing concern over the rise in cases involving physical and emotional abuse of children, Siyam called on the authorities to investigate such crimes with greater seriousness, and punish the perpetrators to the full extent of the law.

“There is an urgent need for the community to come together as one and enhance existing measures to protect children,” he said.

Siyam also called on parents to ensure children are brought up with love for Islam and the Dhivehi language, and adorned with good virtues.
